Why did you decide to pursue an MBA?

I decided to pursue an MBA because I wanted to build on the foundation of my previous education and professional experience. After earning my bachelor’s and master’s degrees, I worked eight years in various business-related roles. During this time, I gained valuable experience but felt it was the right moment to return to university to deepen my knowledge and skills in business.

An Executive MBA was the right choice, as it provides a rigorous academic framework that sharpens critical thinking and problem-solving abilities, which are essential for tackling complex business challenges. The diverse and collaborative environment of an MBA programme offers invaluable insights and perspectives from peers with varied backgrounds, further enriching one’s learning experience.

The Executive MBA programme at Maastricht University appealed to me not only for its strong focus on business but also for its emphasis on personal development and leadership. This program is designed to help individuals grow holistically, teaching us not just how to lead in a business environment but also how to become the better version of ourselves. It addresses the challenges and stresses we face daily, both at work and in our personal lives. Being back at university, and specifically joining MaastrichtMBA has been incredibly inspiring.

How have you benefitted from your MBA degree?

The Executive MBA programme at the Maastricht University has exposed me to new people, ideas, and experiences, which has been invaluable for my growth. Combining my studies with my professional responsibilities has been challenging but rewarding, offering a comprehensive opportunity for development that I am truly grateful for.

Moreover, pursuing an MBA is always a wise decision because it provides a competitive edge in the job market, enhances strategic thinking and problem-solving skills, and opens doors to endless opportunities. It has fostered a global perspective by allowing me to learn from diverse peers and gain insights into international business practices. Ultimately, an MBA equipped me with the tools and confidence to make informed decisions, lead effectively, and navigate the complexities of today’s (business) world.

What advice do you have for anyone considering an Executive MBA at MaastrichtMBA?

If you’re considering the Executive MBA at Maastricht University, my advice is to recognise it as not just a good choice, but possibly the best choice for your MBA journey. The programmes curriculum is exceptional, attracting a diverse and high-quality cohort of professionals. Throughout my experience, I’ve been impressed by my peers and professors and the enriching interactions we’ve had.

Another standout aspect of MaastrichtMBA is its accommodating structure for balancing professional life with studies. The programme offers one-week on-campus modules approximately every 2.5 months or so. This format allows for dedicated focus on education without the disruption of constant on-and-off scheduling, as seen in other programs. This approach significantly contributed to my ability to meet my responsibilities at work while also allowing me to meet my study requirements.

What should applicants consider when they decide to do an MBA?

MaastrichtMBA stands out for its rigorous curriculum, being triple crown-accredited and recognised among the top-notch MBA programs globally. Beyond the standard business education, the programme goes the extra mile by incorporating Leadership Trajectory Development courses. These courses delve into individual growth, helping you understand yourself, define your aspirations, and chart your path forward. This emphasis on personal development has been incredibly valuable for me and is something future candidates should seriously consider.

Ultimately, pursuing an MBA is not just about gaining business-related skills but also about personal growth and becoming the best version of yourself. MaastrichtMBA offers a transformative experience that encompasses both aspects, making it a truly rewarding journey.

How do employers benefit from employees with an MBA degree?

Employers benefit immensely from employees with an Executive MBA degree due to a combination of advanced hard and soft skills that enhance organisational performance. MBA graduates are equipped to address day-to-day business challenges, develop long term strategies, identify opportunities, and foster entrepreneurial and innovative thinking. Beyond technical skills, an MBA education inspires individuals to strive for excellence in both their professional and personal lives.

Speaking from personal experience, the Executive MBA programme reignited my passion for my work and life in general. Being surrounded by inspiring peers and professors motivates employees to go beyond routine tasks, encouraging them to think creatively and strategically. Employers gain from this renewed motivation and enthusiasm. Employees who have completed an MBA are more likely to bring fresh perspectives and a proactive attitude to the workplace. They are not just focused on day-to-day activities but are also driven to innovate and improve processes. This leads to a more dynamic and forward-thinking workforce.

What stands out from your MaastrichtMBA experience?

A significant highlight was my deeper involvement in sustainability. Previously unfamiliar with this topic, the sustainability elective allowed me to gain a comprehensive understanding of corporate responsibility and the importance of ensuring both the well-being of future generations but also the health of the planet itself, which is vital for the life it sustains and the beaty it offers. This new knowledge has inspired me to prioritise sustainability not only in my personal but also in my professional life.

Furthermore, the International Week in South Africa was another transformative experience. It offered insights into the South African economy, political landscape, and sustainability strategies adopted by the country’s companies and startups. This trip not only provided a broader perspective on global business practices but also highlighted the stark contrasts within the country, from luxury hotels and beautiful landscapes to the townships shadowed by economic disparities. This experience emphasised the importance of addressing social inequalities and the role we each play in them. A memorable quote from the Dalai Lama resonated deeply with me during this time: “If you think you are too small to make a difference, try sleeping with a mosquito.” This encapsulates the impact each individual can have on creating positive change.

What has been the most enjoyable part of the MaastrichtMBA programme?

Overall, the most enjoyable and standout aspect of my Executive MBA journey is the network of friendships I’ve built and the memories we’ve created. These moments were not limited to the educational weeks and “Thirsty Thursdays”, but also extended to our gatherings outside of these events. These relationships are invaluable, and I hope they will remain strong in the years to come.
