The insights and thoughts of our MBA students describe the true experience of MaastrichtMBA. This time we talked with our German student Maximilian Würfel. He works as Manager at PD – Berater der öffentlichen Hand, a public consulting company that offers consulting services for public-private partnerships in the field of modern administration and investment projects. Maximilian joined our On-Campus track in May 2020.

WHY DID YOU DECIDE TO PURSUE AN MBA?
I studied philosophy and political science, so I felt that adding some academic business credibility and knowledge would certainly help my career. Moreover, I enjoy adding an intellectual and reflective layer to my day-to-day work. I was confident that MaastrichtMBA would provide for such a stimulus. Lastly, my current job lacks an international environment, so I looked for an opportunity to find and enjoy an international atmosphere.
WHICH SKILLS DO YOU WANT TO REFINE DURING THE ON-CAMPUS TRACK?
I want to refine my leadership skills and be more receptive to other perspectives. Moreover, I hope to receive a good overall training in the relevant business aspects with some additional insights in digitalisation approaches.
WHY DID YOU CHOOSE FOR THE ON-CAMPUS TRACK AT MAASTRICHTMBA?
I chose Maastricht for its reputation, the emphasis on leadership (the Leadership Development Trajectory) and the international atmosphere. I also like the setup of the program – preparation, educational week on premise, assignments. This allows for enough flexibility and at the same time valuable face-to-face experiences with professors and my fellow students.
IN ADDITION, WHY DID YOU CHOOSE FOR THE DIGITAL BUSINESS ELECTIVE?
I am working in a consultancy that executes digitalisation projects. Not having an IT-degree, the Digital Business elective with its modules helps me to get academic credibility in the field and moreover, I benefit from recent scientific insights that I can potentially apply myself.
HOW DO YOU THINK YOU WILL BENEFIT FROM THIS ON-CAMPUS EXECUTIVE MBA?
I will certainly benefit from this On-Campus MBA in several ways. Most importantly, it is an engaging experience that allows you to reflect on your own behavior and provides impulses for personal growth. Naturally, I will also benefit from the conveyed knowledge and the academic title itself. Last but not least, I will end the programme with some new friends – a reason that would suffice to start this On-Campus track on its own.
WHAT HAS BEEN THE MOST ENJOYABLE PART OF THE COURSE SO FAR?
Certainly the intellectual engagement with the topics and my fellow students. It is very intriguing to learn from others, their experiences and perspectives in a positive and engaging environment.
AND HOW DO YOU EXPERIENCE THE MAASTRICHTMBA PROGRAMME AFTER THE CORONA BREAKOUT?
Luckily, I was still able to join the courses in person. I am grateful to the University for organising the class in Maastricht while taking all the necessary precautions. Obviously, it felt different without the possibility to enjoy evenings together and with part of the group joining the online classes, but I got the impression that everyone really enjoyed the face-to-face time and was grateful to be in Maastricht during the educational weeks.
ANY TIPS FOR SOMEONE THINKING ABOUT APPLYING FOR MAASTRICHTMBA?
Before joining MaastrichtMBA, I intellectualised my decision a lot. But the programme surprised me by adding a dimension of personal growth. I am very happy to have made the decision and to benefit from this holistic experience – it is a worthwhile journey and you’ll learn more about yourself than you might initially think.
